(More customer reviews)Early impressions: We've used the Steele three times under more or less ideal conditions on two different urban-sized lawns and so far, it's been fine. The height adjustment on our sample works smoothly and locks positively into place. The mower goes about its business without drama, making the same sounds at the same volume as our 2-year-old Black & Decker CMM1200. The Steele's plastic safety-interlock key is a little flimsy, but its folded shape should give it enough strength for the job. The two-step procedure to deploy the deadman switch seemed fussy until the neighbor kids showed a keen interest in this whirring new toy. We haven't used the bag or side discharge yet, but mulching works well. Just above the blade is a fan to help the clippings stay aloft as the straight blade, which is sharpened nearly to the center, chops and rechops them. The handle is sturdy enough to maneuver the mower's 92 lb. mass, and the heavy battery is placed at the machine's natural pivot point-- you won't notice the extra heft unless you point the thing straight uphill. An advantage of the heavy steel deck is its thinness-- it's easier to tell where the blade's tips are. The CMM1200's plastic deck is much thicker, so you end up overlapping more and using more battery time.
The Steele's battery weighs 35 lb. but has a well-shaped handle. It slips on and off the mower with surprising ease, but is held securely when it's in place and connected to its tethered umbilical. It has its own built-in LED tester so you can at any time tell when you'll need to charge. The wall-wart charger is small and light. The only problem with the battery is how to get another one when the original finally wears out-- the mower is so new on the market that so far, no one is selling replacement batteries.
So far, so good. We took a leap in the dark with this mower, but so far it's proving itself competent and capable. We'll report again after the season ends.
