I used this product for an entire season and got exactly what I was hoping I would get which is a lawn that looks like a baseball stadium outfield or a football field. A few notes for everyone that will help them with this product.
I didn't give it 5 stars because if you take it off your lawn mower and reinstall in on another, if you leave the product filled with sand, it is very heavy, awkward and darn near impossible to reattach without emptying some of it out which may prompt the need to buy more sand. There has to be an easier way to attach this thing.
Now for the good stuff:
* THERE IS DRY SAND PEOPLE! Go to your hardware store and buy colored play sand in the plastic bag. (YES IT IS DRY UNLIKE OTHER SANDS). My home depot has it, it is in different colors made by Crayola. It is fine as dust almost but is listed as 'play sand.' You will use 3/4 of one bag almost to fill it up. I just snipped the tip of the corner of the bag to create a tiny hole and filled it right up very easily by just pouring it right in. You could also use a small funnel if that helps you.
* For stiff grass this is not the best product for you. The theory with the product is to slightly bend the grass without breaking the grass. What makes the stipes is the reflection of the sun on each blade of grass. If you have grass that is very stiff ( i am thinking of the grass in the south they use on football and baseball fields but I don't know the name of it) then it will not work well. For fescues in the midwest it works very well even with the intense heat/dry conditions we had last year.
* Get creative. I did stipes, diamonds like a baseball outfield, and during football season, I did 5 yard sections one way and then 5 yards back the other way which makes the yard look like a very short football field. Very cool!
* I agree with another review that you need to change your pattern up over time for the health of the grass which is common sense given that you should not cut your grass in the same direction each time. However, with this product your stripes will get more pronounced if you do the same direction for 2 mowings. If you have a mower with a lot of horsepower you may not need this. Commercial zero turns seem to do this without rollers or this product. The weak residential walk behinds don't have the horse power to blow the grass down enough to make a difference.
* Be careful with your lawnmower. If you fill the product up with sand it will be very heavy (which is what you want to an extent). However, if you are turning on a grade all the time, it could put a lot of stress on your wheels if you have a high back wheel mower. Mine one wheel recently broke off. I don't blame that on the product. I blame it on hard and heavy use of the mower over the last 7 years before the product was purchased. I think the product hurried it along a bit which is fine because i wanted a new mower anyway!
* Lastly, you did the work to find this product. Keep the secret to your awesome lawn look to yourself. Let them think you are a 'lawn guru' and leave it at that. When they figure it out, then tell them. Until then impress the heck out of everyone!
